U.S. Navy Seabees conduct water well training at Camp Krutke, Afghanistan, earlier this year. The Seabees specialize in a variety of construction and building trades for the U.S. military—including water well drilling.
Crews in Seattle build the pile wall box that would become the “safe haven” for a boring machine drilling two miles of tunnel for State Road 99. “Bertha,” as the machine is named, took her first cuts in July, and the safe haven allowed engineers to work out kinks before getting tunneling under way.
A drill rig works the natural gas fields of Colorado. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Colorado natural gas output accounts for more than 5 percent of U.S. natural gas production.

A government team of drillers uses an Atlas Copco TH60 on an exploratory project near Lake Mead, Nev. The receding lake is crucial to Las Vegas and surrounding areas, so the agency drilled a test well to monitor water quality and quantity. The crew also used an Atlas Copco XRVS compressor and an Atlas Copco Secoroc Aqua 60 down-the-hole hammer to cut through the clay, sand and water.

Marc Natali, field supervisor and driller for C.S. Drilling in Naperville, Ill., uses 4.25-inch hollow stem augers with their Geoprobe 7822DT to install 2-inch monitoring wells at a golf course in suburban Chicago. The project was part of an ongoing subsurface investigation for arsenic. Special care was given to not damage the turf or landscaping at the golf course.
Jeremiah Longoria with San Antonio-based Hard Rock Directional Drilling operates a Vermeer D60x90 Navigator drill on an oil pipeline installation job in western Texas. Here, Longoria monitors a bore 25 feet under an environmentally sensitive area and adjusts the drill head accordingly.
National Exploration Wells and Pumps (EWP) drills a reverse circulation well at 45 degrees to a depth of 200 feet using a Schramm T685WS. A small producer called US Gold hired National EWP to drill exploration holes for future production work at the Tonkin gold project, about one hour from Eureka, Nev. National EWP has about 12 Schramm rigs, ranging from the T450GT to T200XD.
Army Lieutenant Colonel Nelson G. Kerley takes delivery of the first of many water well drilling rig equipment packages from Laibe Corp. Laibe was recently awarded a “sole sourced” program of record contract with the U.S. Army. The packages will include a Versa-Drill V-2000NG, Flat Water Fleet Support Vehicle, Mud Puppy, other equipment and support from Laibe field representatives.

The Djiboutian government allowed for the base’s use by the United States, providing for demining, humanitarian and counter-terrorism efforts, and it now serves as the location from which United States and coalition forces are operating in the Horn of Africa. Today, Camp Lemonnier is the only U.S. military base located in Africa supporting operations geared toward building security, sovereignty, and stability in the region.
