As geopolitical tensions and global supply chain vulnerabilities continue to put pressure on the U.S. critical minerals market, Liberty Star Minerals Chairman Pete O’Heeron is stepping into the national spotlight, urging lawmakers to prioritize American mineral independence.
This week, O’Heeron traveled to the heart of policymaking in Washington, D.C., where he met with staff from key Congressional offices, including those of Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, as well as Representatives Brian Babin (TX-36) and Paul Gosar (AZ-9). The discussions centered on strengthening America’s domestic supply of critical minerals — materials vital to everything from smartphones and electric vehicles to missile systems and renewable energy infrastructure.
"The United States is at a critical juncture in ensuring the security of its supply chain for critical minerals," said O’Heeron during the visit. "We can no longer afford to rely on foreign nations for the materials that power our economy and protect our nation. It’s imperative that the U.S. government take a leadership role in funding and incentivizing domestic mineral exploration."
Liberty Star Minerals, based in Tucson, Arizona, is working to position itself at the forefront of this push. The company’s flagship Hay Mountain Project, located in southeastern Arizona, is believed to be one of the most promising untapped mineral resources in the country. The site targets copper, lithium, rare earth elements, and other high-demand materials crucial to the U.S. clean energy transition and defense sector.
O’Heeron’s visit comes amid a rising chorus of voices in industry and government calling for a national strategy to secure and develop domestic critical mineral resources. With growing demand and tightening international supply, stakeholders argue that the time for U.S. self-reliance in mineral sourcing is now — and companies like Liberty Star are poised to play a pivotal role.
