SLB, a global leader in energy technology, has announced a partnership with Star Energy Geothermal, a subsidiary of Indonesia’s Barito Renewables, to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced geothermal technologies.
The collaboration will leverage SLB’s expertise in energy technology and Star Energy Geothermal’s experience in geothermal resource development to improve the efficiency and scalability of geothermal projects. The goal is to enhance the economic viability of geothermal energy, making it a more competitive and accessible renewable resource.
Geothermal energy is a clean, reliable, and versatile renewable resource, but it has long struggled with high development risks and costs. The partnership between SLB and Star Energy Geothermal aims to tackle these challenges by leveraging advanced technology to make projects more cost-effective and improve energy output.
"In developing technologies for the geothermal industry, collaborating with customers is critical for focusing on the use cases with the most significant economic impact,” said Irlan Amir, Vice President of Renewables and Energy Efficiency at SLB. "In an industry where the risks and levelized cost of energy are perceived to be high, we look forward to working with Star Energy Geothermal to deliver groundbreaking technologies that will lower project risks and improve the overall project economics of this clean, firm, and flexible energy source."
SLB has already collaborated with Star Energy Geothermal on technologies that optimize well placement and leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance drilling efficiency. The new agreement will further expand their joint efforts into subsurface characterization, drilling, and geothermal production technologies. These advancements aim to unlock greater efficiency, maximize resource utilization, and drive down costs.
Star Energy Geothermal currently manages 886 MW of installed electricity capacity and has ambitions to become one of the world’s leading geothermal companies.
"Our vision is to be among the largest and leading geothermal companies in the world,” said Hendra Soetjipto Tan, President Director of Barito Renewables and Group CEO of Star Energy Geothermal. "Aligned with our strategic expansion to support the energy transition, our goal will be enabled by leveraging advanced technologies to enhance the efficiency and economics of our current and future assets. With SLB’s breadth of technologies and our expertise in geothermal resource development and operations, we are confident that together we can solve the technical and economic challenges that are holding back the broader development of geothermal projects across the globe."
As the world shifts toward sustainable and renewable energy solutions, partnerships like this will be crucial in scaling up geothermal development. By bringing together SLB’s technological innovation and Star Energy Geothermal’s operational expertise, this collaboration could mark a turning point for the industry—driving more efficient, cost-effective, and widespread adoption of geothermal energy.
