With the National Ground Water Association Convention in Las Vegas approaching, we have a fantastic opportunity to explore a convention center filled with industry professionals and experienced drillers. Networking can seem challenging, but when done right, it can be incredibly beneficial - especially in an industry as warm and inviting as the drilling industry.
Networking can create genuine connections. It resembles making friends as a child, where approaching someone and asking them if they want to be your “friend” feels completely natural.
Here are some tips on how to take your networking abilities to the next level:
1. Know Your Goals:
Understanding your networking goals is crucial. By knowing what your goals are, you can approach people with greater confidence and build stronger relationships. Don’t underestimate your value in the industry. Believing in yourself and setting big goals will put you in the right mindset to get you where you want to be.
2. Be Genuine & Listen:
Ask questions. Show an interest in what people are saying and really listen. People in the drilling world love to talk about the industry, so be sure to listen closely - you never know when you’re going to learn something new.
Be genuine in who you are and where you are in your career. The drilling industry is a beautiful place filled with opportunity and community. When people see that you care about the industry and bring a positive energy, they’ll want to connect with you.
3. Offer Help:
Since networking can feel transactional sometimes, offering yourself up to help out on different levels like sharing your knowledge and skills, advice and expertise, or even just your time, helps with that heavy opportunistic feeling.
Industry events are always happening and the people running and organizing these events always appreciate an extra hand. Reach out to offer your assistance in whatever fashion you feel comfortable with.
4. Diversity:
Don’t limit your networking to people with the same or similar job titles as yours. It’s more valuable to connect with people across the entirety of the industry- from drillers to operations managers, to manufacturers and sales reps, and so on. The drilling industry is incredibly diverse with each role bringing unique knowledge and experience. Build connections with a variety of professionals and learn from their expertise.
5. Reputation:
Maintaining a good reputation is essential, so always strive to uphold it. People talk, and word spreads quickly, so be sure to remain professional and approachable. A great way to show people that you are passionate and professional is by attending and actively participating in industry events. Bring along business cards and focus on having quality, meaningful conversations with people.
6. Social Media:
Social media is an easy and effective tool to build and maintain relationships. Whether it’s connecting with a like-minded person online or staying in touch with someone that you meet at an event, the internet has some great opportunities to expand your network, create new relationships, and nurture existing ones.
Industry networking can be challenging, but with these tips, you will be able to make some genuine, long-lasting connections. It is very satisfying to immerse yourself in the industry when attending these events. It's all about learning about yourself, helping others, and expanding.
Embrace and appreciate the connections that come your way.
Happy networking!
