Sustainable Westchester has announced a Request for Proposals (RFP) aimed at geothermal drill rig manufacturers to form a partnership in developing a Geothermal Driller Training Program. The initiative seeks to cultivate skilled professionals in operating and maintaining geothermal drilling rigs, with an end goal of achieving IGSHPA certification for participants. Additionally, the program aims to create a sustainable model whereby certified drillers can lease rigs to install community-based thermal energy networks (TENs).

The program is set to begin with a pre-apprenticeship phase, followed by comprehensive training and deployment. Sustainable Westchester has teamed up with prominent partners, including The State University of New York, Westchester County Office of Economic Development, New York Geothermal Energy Organization, International Ground Source Heat Pump Association, Brightcore Energy, Dandelion Energy, and the International Union of Operating Engineers to bring this project to fruition.

The collaborative effort aims to establish a standardized training curriculum that supports the expansion of geothermal energy systems throughout New York State and the Northeast region. The selected partner will provide a geothermal drill rig and components, assist in curriculum development, host apprentices for hands-on training, and coordinate with local manufacturers for the production of necessary parts.

This partnership reflects Sustainable Westchester’s commitment to enhancing the skills needed in the renewable energy sector and supporting community energy solutions through educational and operational initiatives.
