Sandvik Construction has expanded its surface drilling product line with the new Commando DC130Ri top hammer drill rig. The company developed the compact, rubber-tired rig based on customer feedback.

The new rig has its roots in a range of rigs launched in 1988, but features an updated modular design and practical layout of components, new intelligent control system and a range of other core features. The unit, which rides on a four-wheel carrier, is fully remote controlled, hydraulic and self-propelled. It is designed for 22-45 millimeter boreholes.

Sandvik Construction says the Commando’s high penetration rates are due to a completely new RD106 rock drill, providing 5.5 kW of output power, as well as the unit’s intelligent drilling control system. Customers can get expanded versatility from the Commando’s large coverage area and new, forward-pointing feed, which allows drilling close to structures.

The Commando DC130Ri is designed for road construction, demolition works, secondary breaking, foundation drilling, trenching, shaft sinking and dimensional stone quarrying.

The intelligent control system helps operators save fuel and smooth out the drilling process, which can extend the life of tooling. The 7-inch on-board touchscreen allows operators to monitor drilling operations and quickly adjust as needed. Optional control system features include torque control and automatic feed-percussion-follow-up, which enables automatic adjustments in varying conditions.

Sandvik says the Commando DC130Ri was made for mobility. Its compact size and light-weight construction allow for easy transportation. It’s also equipped with four high-torque tramming motors and skid steering for mobility on the jobsite. The unit also has an optimized center of gravity for slope work, and extendable ground legs for added stability.

The Commando comes equipped with a low-emission CAT C2.2 Tier-3 engine.
