The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) has chosen Paul Barlow of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Northborough, Mass., and Stanley Leake of the USGS Tucson, Ariz., to receive the John Hem Award for Excellence in Science & Engineering.

The two have collectively spent more than 60 years investigating groundwater and surface water exchange and numerical simulation. The John Hem Award honors their scientific and engineering contributions to the understanding of groundwater.

Barlow and Leake recently released a report, “Streamflow Depletion by Wells—Understanding and Managing the Effects of Groundwater Pumping on Streamflow.” (Click here to view the report as a PDF.) The report aims to highlight knowledge of the effects of groundwater pumping on stream flow. It uses simple graphs to express complex scientific concepts useful for understanding and managing stream flow depletion.

The award will be presented in December at the 2014 NGWA Groundwater Expo in Las Vegas.
