The drilling division of
Frontier-Kemper Constructors Inc. (FKCI), headquartered in Evansville,
Ind., recently completed a 20-foot-diameter
blind drilled shaft for Cline Resource’s Sugar Camp Mine in southern Illinois. The final
depth of the shaft was 980 feet, setting a new world record for the largest
full-face blind drilled shaft ever constructed. The shaft was drilled using the
FK350MT, FKCI’s blind drilling system. Congratulations to Charlie Ernst (blind
drill superintendent) and his crew, Dave Brickey (senior mechanical engineer)
and the rest of the engineering group, and all of the shop personnel for their
long hours of successful hard work. The project faced many challenges and obstacles,
but once again, FKCI’s classic can-do attitude, coupled with a strong sense of
teamwork, brought the project to successful completion.
