On the Job: Miller Utilizes Sonic Technology
Miller Drilling Co., Lawrenceburg, Tenn., provided the sonic capability and expertise to drill and install borings for piezometers and inclinometers at the Saluda Dam in South Carolina. The firm drilled through rip rap, crushed stone, soils and bedrock to facilitate the conversion from temporary instrumentation to permanent monitoring wells as part of phase I and phase II of a $170,000 contract with SCANA Corp. Three-foot protective casings were installed to protect inclinometers and piezometers, and they were completed with flush-mount covers and concrete pads. Some boreholes included two piezometers, and installation of steel casing required for stabilization above the zone of interest to monitor water levels in separate soil types. Double-piezometer installations required a zone of bentonite between zones to form an impermeable layer.
