EPA Proposes No-Discharge Zone
EPA region 4 recently proposed designating the Florida Keys a "no-discharge" zone for wastewater. The proposed rulemaking would prohibit discharges of treated and untreated wastewaters from vessels operating within the Florida state boundaries of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. According to EPA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in a separate effort is seeking to have all federal waters within the sanctuary designated as a no-discharge zone. EPA's proposal was developed in response to requests from the Florida Board of County Commissioners, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and officials of Monroe County, Fla.
