The House Science Committee recently passed the Water Infrastructure and Research Development Act, which authorizes $60 million over five years for research into ways to protect drinking water and waste water facilities against potential terrorist threats.
Research areas include cyber security; physical asset security; and detection, monitoring and treatment of chemical, biological and radiological contaminants.
The legislation has the support of the following organizations: National Association of Counties, the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies, the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Water Works Research Foundation and the Association of California Water Agencies.
