In an effort to reduce environmental damage from acid mine drainage, EPA is taking comment on new data concerning remining practices that retrieve coal from abandoned mines. In April 2000, EPA proposed changes to current discharge guidelines for mines, to encourage the extraction of coal from abandoned mine lands while reducing the pollution caused by acid mine drainage. The proposal would significantly increase the rate at which abandoned mine lands are reclaimed, improving water quality and removing hazardous conditions while utilizing remaining coal.
