The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration Inc., featured the theme. 'New Frontiers in Mining - Meeting 21st Century Challenges', during its 2000 Annual Meeting and Exhibit February 28 - March 1 in Salt Lake City, UT.
Meeting attendance reached 4,800 mineral professionals and 580 booths. The technical program included 80 sessions and four specialty symposia: Bulk Material Handling, Control 2000, Minor Elements 2000, and Plant Operators.
Another meeting highlight included the Keynote Session: Meeting the Challenges to 21st Century Mining. This timely program focused on the mining industry of the future from the vantage point of three industry leaders. Speakers included: General Richard Lawson, president and CEO, National Mining Association, Robert Wilson, chairman and CEO, Roi Tinto plc, and Douglas Yearly, chairman and CEO, Phelps Dodge Corporation.
SME has begun planning its 2001 Annual Meeting, February 26-28 in Denver, CO. The meeting carries the theme "2001 - A Mining Odyssey". A call for papers has been issued and exhibit space is 80% reserved.
